Francis Chan and Social Media

“We live in a time when people are very quick to speak,” Chan says. “The Bible commands us opposite of that. With social media, there’s just a lot more words. It almost seems like the goal on social media is to say something as loudly as you can for the shock value so that you catch people’s attention. Yet that’s not what Scripture tells us.

“Scripture tells us with the abundance of words sin is not absent. Scripture tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry.”

Redeeming His People

Remember that God gave the Mosaic law after redeeming His people. For sinners, grace precedes law, and seeking to be faithful to the law is how sinners thank God for His grace. Nevertheless, the law promises life to those who keep it perfectly (Lev. 18:5). Those who do it perfectly will be justified (Rom. 2:13). But sinners cannot keep the law with the perfection God demands, and recognizing this, God included in the law the gracious provision of sacrifices to atone for sin”

Galations 6

Galatians 6 (NIV)

Doing Good to All

1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.

Social Media & the rise of Celebrity Worship Syndrome

Maria Schindlecker's avatarThe Opinionist Online

Social media is the first thing we look at when we wake up and the last thing when we go to sleep. In a world where everyone is always on their phones, laptops and tablets the chances that you have at least one social media app open are high. The chances that you are following a celebrity, spots person, model or singer are also high.

A few years ago I wrote on the impact Celebrity Worship Syndrome (CWS) was having on people.   Whilst the syndrome has been around for a while the impact social media has had on its increase cannot go unnoticed.

Prior to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like, the only access to these celebrities’ was through television interviews and what we read in magazines.

Now nearly every celebrity has a social media account on nearly every platform you can think of. We have more access to them…

Wise and Foolish Builders

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Shake it Off: Music for Moody Moms Like Me

Lisa's avatarGrace in the Gravel

Before I became a mom, I thought I was pretty even-keel. Not easily rattled.

Yet there is nothing like two-tiny, needy little humans to prove me just how fickle my moods can be.

Often, moods of frustration, anger, or sadness are triggered by simply letting myself think my own thoughts. These are always exaggerated. These always include sweeping statement words like always, never, when will I be able to just do (fill in the blank with words like sleep, eat, pee alone, take a shower). For instance, if I’m looking around the house at our continual mess I may think “everyone is always working AGAINST me in this house!”. If I come home from work and everyone is screaming for snacks while I’m trying to simply microwaveleftovers for dinnerI think, “Is having 30 minutes to prepare a meal too much to ask?“.

I am self-aware enough to know…
